Scots' Bloye USA South's top rookie and other sports news

Covenant College freshman Caleb Bloye was chosen the USA South baseball rookie of the year for 2015, and senior teammate Scott Gillespie made the all-conference second team. Gillespie batted .358 with six home runs and 27 RBIs and ended his Scots career with 204 hits, second most in school history. He hit .349 for his career with 131 RBIs and a Scots-record 96 walks. Bloye hit .347 with 28 RBIs this season, and his .382 average in USAS games was the best for any league newcomer. He led Covenant with 18 multihit games and nine multi-RBI games. Will Cleland was the Scots' representative on the all-sportsmanship team.

Softball

* The Lady Moc RBI Club is hosting a gameday breakfast Saturday at 9 a.m. at Wally's on McCallie Avenue with UTC pitching coach Michelle Fuzzard LaCourse as the guest speaker. The public is welcome to come and order from the menu; reservations are not needed. The Mocs are hosting Samford at 7 p.m. Saturday and in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Sunday in their last series of the season, and they can clinch the Southern Conference regular-season title by winning two of those games. The club's anual team "appreciation dinner" is set for 6:30 p.m. (social hour starting at 5:30) Monday at Finley Stadium, and tickets cost $15. They will be available at the weekend's games at Frost Stadium; anyone wishing to make reservations and pay at the door can call Mike Burke at 315-2046.

* Freshman pitcher Madison Gossett from Dade County was one of three all-conference selections from the Brenau softball team, and Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton joined her on the Southern States all-freshman team. Second-teamer Gossett, who received a Gold Glove in recognition of her error-free fielding, was second in the SSAC with 16 wins, 160 innings and 140 strikeouts and tied for first with four saves. Payne had a .392 on-base percentage and five home runs.

Golf

* Kensington Wieland from Loudon, Tenn., is transferring from the University of Cincinnati to Lee University and will join the Lee women's golf program as a redshirt sophomore. "We are very excited to be adding Kensington to the Lee University family," coach John Maupin said in a Lee release. "Her experience and work ethic will be great additions to our team. She will have the opportunity to be a big contributor next season." Maupin said he had followed her "successful junior career," which included a TSSAA state championship in 2010. "I like the emphasis on Christian education and community. Athletically and academically Lee is a perfect fit for me," the 2014-15 NCAA Division I Academic All-American said. "Coach Maupin is so highly regarded by his players and peers in the coaching world. I'm really honored to be able to play for him," Wieland added.

Soccer

* Central High School senior Bryson Lemons recently signed to continue his soccer career at Hiwassee College. He is the Purple Pounders' leading scorer this season with 14 goals and four assists, and he is in his second year as a team captain. "Bryson embodies the idea of student-athlete," Central coach Jim Stone said. "He does extremely well in school, is well-liked and respected by his peers and teachers, puts in a great amount of effort both academically and athletically and is a fierce competitor." Lemons has played on an area travel soccer club the past six years and is a two-time state wrestling medalist. He has a head start on college through Chattanooga State's joint-enrollment program and is receiving both academic and athletic aid from Hiwassee.

* The Red Bank-based Premier Soccer Academy under-16 girls' team, Las Leonas, reached their age-group final in the United Cup of Champions spring tournament last weekend in Hendersonville and Goodlettsville, Tenn. Las Leonas, in their first year together as a group, won 3-0 over the White House Legends, 3-0 over the Murfreesboro Lady Strikers 2000 Elite and 4-1 over the Tennessee Soccer Club 2018 Nike before falling 2-0 to Tennessee United SC 00 Red.

Basketball

* North Murray High School senior Alex Viars signed papers Wednesday to signify his plans to continue his basketball career at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. Viars shot a school-record 160 3-point shots this past season and made a school-record 46 percent of them as he helped the Mountaineers win 19 games and reach the Georgia Class AAA playoffs. "I wanted to stay close to home the first two years (of college), so (GNTC) is in a good location for me," he said in a GNTC release, noting also his familiarity with several Bobcats. "He definitely added a dimension to our offfense that allowed us to stretch the floor," North Murray coach Tim Ellis said. "He caused (foes) to change their game plans and was someone people had to account for. ... He's really team-oriented. He won't force shots and he shares the ball well."
