McQuilken medalist in NAIA tourney and other sports news

The quick success of Dalton State's sports teams in their first year of postseason eligibility continued this week with the women's golfers tying for second in the NAIA national tournament and the Roadrunners' Julia McQuilken winning the individual title by five strokes. McQuilken shot her worst score of the week, a 5-over-par 77, on Friday and still won by five strokes over runner-up Elsa Westin of team champion Northwood at Savannah Quarters Country Club at Pooler, Ga. "It's a great feeling to finally have my first college win," the junior from Tampa, Fla., said in a DSC release. "Coming in first as an individual is awesome, but finishing in second as a first-year program as a team is even more special." Northwood totaled 1211 with a final-day 296, and Dalton State, William Woods and SCAD-Savannah were next at 1233. The Roadrunners' Caroline Griffin was sixth individually at 301, and Erika Wardzinski and Rachel Rebne shot 318 and 325.

* Taylor Lewis and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Brooks Thomas each shot 4-under 67 in the opening round of the Signal Mountain Invitational to take the early lead. Play was halted for for more than two hours due to inclement conditions that left several groups on the course at dark. They'll complete their first round this morning. Drew Czuchry shot a 68, while Mikey Feher and Taylor McCullum shot 70s.

Football

* Former McCallie School and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga quarterback star B.J. Coleman was the Arena Football League player of the week after passing for four touchdowns and 160 yards in the Arizona Rattlers' 47-39 win over the New Orleana VooDoo. Coleman, an AFL rookie, will make his third start tonight in Phoenix against the Las Vegas Outlaws.

Boxing

* Chattanooga's Slade Corvin finished third Friday night in the 108-pound class of the National Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Las Vegas. The Y-CAP boxing program representative lost in the semifinals to Pablo Ramirez from Texas.

Baseball

* The Tennessee Temple baseball team ended the school's final representation under the Temple name with a 4-2 loss Friday to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in the USCAA Small College World Series at Hampton, Va. Starting pitcher Micah Wyatt was 2-for-3 and scored a run and allowed three earned runs for TTU (21-12), which tied the score with a two-run fifth inning featuring a Ryan Bruce triple but gave up single runs in the sixth and seventh.

* Nationally fourth-ranked Walters State sent 22nd-ranked Chattanooga State to the losers bracket of the NJCAA Division I East Central District baseball tournament with an 11-2 victory Friday in Morristown, Tenn. Chattanooga State (31-12) plays at 11 this morning against South Georgia State (36-23), which eliminated Georgia regular-season and tournament champion Darton State, for a spot in the final(s) at 3 against host Walters (53-10). Ross Grosvenor had three hits and matched Kyle Wilson, who homered, with three RBIs for the Senators, while pitchers Jake Usher and Brett Jones allowed the Tigers only five hits. Nate Schmal had an RBI in defeat.

General

* Chattanooga Christian seniors Joanna Smith and Hannah Stewart are set to play basketball and volleyball, respectively, at NCAA Division III member Covenant College, and classmate Rachel Farlett signed papers to continue her soccer career at NAIA school Bryan College. The three were honored at a CCS lunchtime gathering this week. Smith is a three-time all-district player who surpassed 1,000 points in her Lady Chargers career and also competed in track and field. Stewart was all-district in volleyball and likewise was a track athlete. Smith cited Covenant's academic reputation as a key reason for her choice, and Stewart said she was "excited for a new community at Covenant and a new opportunity for me to see how faithful the Lord is." Farlett referred to Bryan as "an incredible school."
