The Chattanooga Football Club women's soccer team had a number of opportunities to win its season-opening match Saturday afternoon against FC Nashville.

The CFC women also faced a number of chances against them that could have lost it.

Instead, the teams battled to a 1-all draw at Finley Stadium.

CFC travels to the Rathmell Sports Complex in Birmingham next Saturday to face Alabama FC at 8 p.m.

Elisha Fry scored CFC's first goal of the year, taking a feed in the box from former Soddy-Daisy standout Summer Lanter and knocking home the shot right before the end of the first half.

"It's great to be back out on the field," Fry said. "Chattanooga is a big place for soccer. It was our first game and we're trying to get fit, and the [warmer] conditions played a part in today's match."

As is to be expected in a first match, neither team was sharp. Lanter, Hannah Wyatt, Blair Barker, Kelly Downs and Allison Sole were dangerous in the CFC attack, and Ruth Terry took a shot from about 20 yards out that sailed high.

On one play, Lanter dribbled the ball around the keeper and had an open goal from the right angle but chipped the attempt high.

CFC coach Moises Drumond agreed that the fitness level was something the club was going to have to improve on, but that will help with the addition of some new players in the next couple of weeks -- including some current high school players who aren't eligible to participate until the end of the academic school year.

"There was some good and bad today," said Drumond, who coaches at Soddy-Daisy. "We created enough opportunities to win the game, and we have a lot of new faces, but I thought we played pretty well."

Nashville tied the score in the 75th minute on a goal by Candace West.

* The Chattanooga FC men improved to 3-0 for the season with a 1-0 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves on Saturday in Atlanta. Chris Ochieng scored the goal.

The men will host the New Orleans Jesters this coming Saturday at Finley Stadium.
