Another Guerry set to enter Sewanee hall and other sports news

Chattanooga businessman and philanthropist John Guerry will be among the 2015 inductees into the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame. They will be honored Oct. 23-24. The others are cross country, wrestling and track captain and 12-letter winner Kent Rhea (class of 1957); wrestling star and football player Kevin Lenahan (1974); volleyball player Elizabeth Epps (1987); football scholar-athlete Jason Forrester (1993); former SCAC cross country and track runner of the year Ian Cross (1998); and the 1970 men's golf team that won conference and Tennessee championships. That team, coached by Walter Bryant, included captain Edward White, CAC medalist George Waterhouse, CAC runner-up Rob Chapman, Felix Drennan, Nim Long, Jack Steinmeyer, Jock Tonissen and Mike Turner. Guerry, who graduated from Sewanee in 1949, joins his father (Alexander), his brother (Alex Jr.) and his son (Pat) in the hall. He was a three-year tennis letterman who led the Tigers to two TIAC titles, was the TIAC singles runner-up in 1948 and doubles runner-up in 1949 and through the years led numerous financial drives for the program. He has been the University Alumni president, a trustee and a Board of Regents member.

Softball

* Chattanoogans Tory Lewis and Shalilyah Geathers each was 2-for-3 with a double as the eighth-ranked Tennessee softball team beat Utah 3-1 on Sunday to win the Knoxville regional and set up a super regional series Thursday and Friday at home against Florida State. Meghan Gregg hit a two-run homer and Lewis had the other RBI for the Lady Vols (45-14).

* Chattanooga State's Izzy McCurry, Dana Horgan and Sydney Sloan all made the all-tournament team after the Lady Tigers went 5-2 and finished third for the second consecutive year in the NJCAA Division I nationals at St. George, Utah. They were 50-13 for the season.

Baseball

* The Lee University baseball team is seeded second and grouped in Pool B with Oklahoma Christian, Bethesda, Trinity Christian (Chicago) and Oakland City in the NCCAA World Series that begins Wednesday in Mason, Ohio. Lee finished second last year to Fresno Pacific, which is grouped with Palm Beach Atlantic, Central Baptist, Toccoa Falls and Bluefield. Lee is scheduled for two games Wednesday, at 1 p.m. against Trinity and at 8 against Bethesda.

Lacrosse

* McCallie School won the state high school lacrosse championship Saturday with a 13-11 victory over Memphis University School at Ensworth High in Nashville. The match was close throughout, but the Blue Tornado led at the end of every quarter. Tyler Wilks was the offensive most valuable player of the game after scoring four goals and adding an assist, but Zach Hutchko and Samuel Viscomi each scored three goals and Braiden Davis had two. McCallie's Jeff Durden was the defensive MVP while Tate Boyce made 15 saves in goal and Zach Stephenson won 20 of 25 face-offs. Durden, Davis, Boyce and Wilks were All-Americans this year -- Boyce and Davis for the second time -- and Hutchko, Stephenson and Drew Lukacs joined them on the all-state first team with Mick Upchurch a second-teamer. McCallie has had 58 NCAA lacrosse commitments since starting the program in 1989-90, and 24 Division I commitments and one MLL player since 2004. The 2015 team has 11 D-I commitments, three for D-II programs and two for D-III.

Golf

* Brooke Pancake and Blakesly Warren of Chattanooga, Emily McLennan from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Jenna Burris and Hollee Sadler of Manchester, Tenn., and Dalton State golfer Erika Wardzinski are among the 78 entrants in a 36-hole U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifier today at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta. They will be competing for two spots and two alternate positions for the national championship event July 9-12 in Lancaster, Pa.

* Cres Dodd of Calhoun tied for eighth in the 2015 Georgia Mid-Amateur golf tournament played Friday through Sunday at Marietta Country Club. He shot a 4-over-par 214, nine shots behind winner Jack Hall of Savannah, who closed with a 68. William Hamilton of Calhoun tied for 21st at 219 with Sunday's best round, a 67.
