Around the Region: SoCon honors UTC runners

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga seniors Teghan Henderson and Paul Stuart were honored as the Southern Conference cross country runners of the week after leading both Mocs teams to second place behind Auburn in Jacksonville State's meet last Saturday. Despite wet conditions, Henderson set a course record of 17 minutes, 15.47 seconds in the 5-kilometer women's race, and Stuart was fifth individually with a personal-record 25:19.81 in the men's 8k.

GOLF

* With senior Colby Roach setting a school record with a second-day 68 on Tuesday, the Bryan College Lions set a program record with a 285 that catapulted them past Union College and St. Andrews for the championship at the Union Bulldog Invitational at Wasiota Winds Golf Course in Pineville, Ky. Bryan won the nine-team tournament by one stroke at 583 as Nick Scully shot 146, Tom Durbin and Roach carded 147s and Clayton Myers added a 148. Junior transfer Carson Griffin helped in the rally with his second-round 70.

SOFTBALL

* Covenant College had five players listed on the 2015 National Fastpitch Coaches Association's All-America Scholar-Athlete team for NCAA Division III: sophomores Jami Johnson and Joni Johnson from Louisiana, sophomore Jacey Massetto from California and sophomore Shannon Schmitt and junior Kaitlyn Sirmons from Florida. Selection requires a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. All five were USA South all-academic honorees last spring.
