Former Lee University basketball player Larriques "Beast" Cunningham is one of four new players signed for the Harlem Globetrotters' 2016 world tour. The Globetrotters will be celebrating the organization's 90th year. Cunningham, a 6-foot-5 forward from Royston, Ga., who was a high school state high jump champion, played the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons for Lee after transferring from Roane State. Lee's Flames went 51-17 and reached the NAIA national tournament both years. He averaged 13 points and seven rebounds a game as a senior and made the All-Southern States Athletic Conference team. Cunningham has played professionally in the NBA Development League, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Mexico."We can't wait to hit the floor and celebrate our 90th year with families around the world," Globetrotters player personnel director Sweet Lou Dunbar said in a release, "and we are excited about what these outstanding rookies will bring to the court to help us give our wonderful fans memories that will last a lifetime." Former Tennessee Wesleyan standout Paul "Showtime" Gaffney had a lengthy career as the Globetrotters' man in the middle, and in recent years he founded the Chattanooga Rail Runners minor league team.
Soccer
* Covenant College won its USA South women's soccer game 1-0 on Saturday against visiting North Carolina Wesleyan. The score came on Ruth Terry's free kick in the 54th minute, after the opposing goalkeeper tried to pick up the ball outside the 18-yard box. The Lady Scots (6-4, 4-3) were outshot 7-1 in the first half and 11-6 for the game; Rachel Lemay made four saves in the shutout.
* The Covenant College men's soccer team lost 3-1 to Methodist at Chattanooga Christian, despite scoring first on Michael Arango's breakaway goal in the 36th minute. Dylan Thomas tied the score just before halftime and Ben Gold and Seth Harrison added goals for Methodist (6-4-3, 3-0-2) in the second half. The Scots are 3-8-1, 2-2-1.
* William Carey won 2-1 over visiting Dalton State in Southern States Athletic Conference men's soccer Saturday night in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Crusaders (6-5-2, 1-1-1) led 2-0 on two Roger Viladomiu goals. Ramiro Guerrero scored for the first-year DSC team (9-4-1, 2-2), which is ranked 19th in the NAIA.
* The Bryan College and St. Andrews women's soccer teams played to a 2-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference tie Saturday in Dayton, and the Bryan men (6-4-2) lost 3-2 to 25th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett in nonconference play.
* Reinhardt edged visiting Tennessee Wesleyan in AAC men's soccer Saturday, dropping the Bulldogs to 6-5-1, 3-2-1. Third-place Reinhardt is 6-5, 4-1.
Running
* Geno Phillips won the Johnson Mental Health Center Great Pumpkin Run 10k on Saturday by 11 seconds over Dean Thompson, the masters winner, and UTC runner Keeley Stewart was the women's winner and 10th overall in 40:51. Phillips' time was 34:54. Lisa Logan was the female masters winner and 19th overall, one spot behind women's runner-up Jennifer Curtis. The top six finishers all were over 40 years old. Grand masters winner Tim Ensign was third, Ryan Shrum fourth, Justin Guy fifth and Tripp McCallie sixth.
* Both Sewanee cross country teams finished fourth out of 13 teams Saturday at the Kentucky Wesleyan Fast Cats Classic. The Tigers' Mark McAlister was eighth and Logan Stockton was 18th individually in the 8k, and Amy Lee was 16th in the 5k.
Golf
* Sewanee moved up this past week to 10th in the Golfstat team rankings for NCAA Division III women's golf, and Tigers senior Emily Javadi from Chattanooga rose to No. 4 individually. Freshman Meghan Symonds is 36th.
General
* UTC vice chancellor and athletic director David Blackburn will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
Field Hockey
* Rhodes College's Mary Rose Hazel scored the only goal of the match in the 45th minute as the Lynx won in Southern Athletic Association field hockey Saturday at Sewanee. The Lynx (8-4, 4-1) outshot the host Tigers (7-3, 2-2) 26-1, with a 12-1 edge in attempts on goal. Katya Waters had 11 saves in defeat.
Softball
* The Georgia Region 7-AAAA softball championship game between Ridgeland and Heritage will resume Monday at 1 p.m. at Heritage with the score tied at 2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game was suspended Friday due to storms and was set to resume Saturday. However, the field at Heritage remained unplayable. When play resumes, the host Generals will have runners on second and first with one out.
