Sewanee tennis players Eric Roddy and Jack Gray from Chattanooga and Baylor School will play this afternoon in Sumter, S.C., in the doubles final of the USTA/ITA Small College Championship. They will play a duo from Trinity (Texas) University for the national title. Roddy and Gray upset third-seeded Jake Humphreys and Michael Treis of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 6-2, 6-3 in their quarterfinal match Thursday morning and then beat a Skidmore pair 7-5, 6-4.

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has three women's players - seniors Kayla Jones and Kelsey Coots and sophomore Samantha Caswell - in the main draw of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional beginning today at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. The men's Ohio Valley Regional began Thursday in Knoxville, and three Mocs - John Peacey, Lucas Plesky and Nick Wingord each won in singles but then lost. Peacey beat Morehead State's Nick Mercer 6-4, 6-4 and lost 6-0, 6-2 to East Tennessee State's fourth-seeded David Biosca, while Plesky downed Eastern Kentucky's Diogo Soares 6-0, 6-2 but fell 6-1, 6-0 to Indiana's seeded Sam Monette. Wingord topped Xavier's Jeremy Schneider 6-3, 6-2 before falling 6-3, 6-4 to Kentucky's Williams Bushamuka. UTC's Luke Saunders lost 6-4, 6-3 to Tennessee Tech's Alvaro Esteban in round one. Saunders begins consolation play this morning.

Softball

* UTC softball players Taylor Deason, Jenny Garcia, Nicole Osterman, Anyssa Robles, Alyssa Taylor and Sam Taylor were named 2015 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athletes for having 3.5 or better grade point averages for the 2014-15 school year. Deason, Garcia and Osterman were seniors on the team that won the 2015 Southern Conference championship; the other three are seniors now. "Academics have always been our number-one priority," coach Frank Reed said in a UTC release. "When we recruit players, we tell them, 'You're a student first and an athlete second.' We pride ourselves on good GPAs." The team had a 3.12 GPA for 2014-15.

Volleyball

* Beth Cecil had 18 kills and Elizabeth Johnson had 33 assists as Centre College won 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-15) in Southern Athletic Association volleyball Thursday at Sewanee. Caroline Montgomery led Sewanee (10-10, 3-7) in kills with five and had two block solos and three block assists. Walker Buxton had 15 assists, while Sara Jayne Sutton had 14 digs and Diamond Stewart and Caroline Owens added 12 each. Centre is 11-10, 6-4.

Bowling

* The CABA's 11th annual Scotch Doubles Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at Holiday Bowl Brainerd to benefit the association's youth scholarship fund. Teams consist of one youth and one adult bowler. Squad times are 1 and 3:30 p.m. both days with pizza served between shifts. This is not a sanctioned tournament and is open to everyone, at $13 per bowler.
