The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga improved its historic volleyball season with a 3-1 Southern Conference victory Thursday at Mercer. Lauren Greenspoon had 30 assists and backup setter Madison Bergren had 15 for UTC (19-4, 8-2) in the 23-25, 25-20, 25-14, 26-24 match, while Allie Davenport had 18 kills and Kristy Wieser and Sarah Batterton had 11 and 10 with .611 and .471 with hitting percentages. Rachel Petkosh had four of the Mocs' 13 aces with fellow freshman Miranda Elpers serving three. Catherine Chason had 17 digs; Elpers had 10, plus eight kills.

Soccer

* UTC senior Clare Latham was chosen for the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District second team for Division I women's soccer. Latham, who scored the deciding goal in the Mocs' first Southern Conference win in three years, carries a 4.0 grade point average with a major in early childhood education. She finished her soccer career with nine goals and 12 assists.

* The Covenant College women's soccer team is seeded fifth for the eight-team USA South tournament and will play a quarterfinal at fourth seed Meredith at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The Covenant men, which lost 2-1 to Maryville late Wednesday night at Chattanooga Christian, are seeded sixth and open at third seed Maryville at 2:30 Saturday. Maryville's women also are seeded third.

Basketball

* Fresh off a rings ceremony Tuesday night for winning the NAIA Division I men's title last season, and carrying the NAIA No. 1 preseason ranking, Dalton State begins its basketball season tonight and tomorrow against Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville in the latter's gym. But the Roadrunners' only returning starter is national tournament MVP Jordan Bowling, and they have a dozen newcomers, including Bowling's twin, Taylor.

Baseball

* The Chattanooga Cyclones baseball team had four all-tournament selections for the World Wood Bat World Championship played last week in Jupiter, Fla. In addition to Cade Evans, whose .714 batting average and 10 hits led all tournament players with eight or more at-bats, the Cyclones were represented by Alex Tucker and Breonn Pooler with .400 averages and pitcher Tanner Jones. Tucker drove in five runs, and Pooler had a .600 on-base percentage.
