Bulls, Mojo split first-place games and more Chattanooga region sports news

Austin Hutchison and the Cleveland Bulls ended the Charleston Mojo's nine-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory Sunday in a Chattanooga United States Adult Baseball League doubleheader at Lee University, but the Mojo regained a one-game lead over the Bulls for first place with a 5-3 win in the rematch. Matt Roueche pitched a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the victory for the Mojo (10-2), and Chris Caffrey was 2-for-4 with a triple, a run batted in and two scored. Dustin Crumley had an RBI single. Hutchison struck out 10 and allowed three hits in the first game, when the Mojo's Jake Wyrick allowed one hit and no earned runs and struck out six in 3 2/3 innings.

Auto Racing

* Local classic super car dealer Ron Lane defeated Jeg Coughlin Jr. in the finals of the 10th annual Ultimate Sixty-Four Shootout held at the Mountain Park Dragway in Clay City, Kentucky last Friday. Lane ran a perfect 4.51 on a 4.51 dial in the finals. The win continued Lane's recent run of success, having won races in four consecutive weeks.

* Justin Summers won the Limited Late Model class in racing Saturday night at I-75 Speedway in Sweetwater. Jesse Lowe was second behind Summers, and Jason Cardwell was third. In other classes, Jamie Lackey won in B-Hobby, Nick Bowling in Sportsman, Dan Tarantino in Super Truck, Allen Walker in Thunder, Dustin Pueirrtt in Four Cylinder and Kane Pelfrey in Front Wheel Drive.

Volleyball

* Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School graduate Gabby Pace has signed on to play volleyball for Georgia Northwestern Technical College, where she plans to study automotive engine repair. Pace helped LFO reach the Georgia Class AAA state playoffs the past two seasons. "I'm mostly a back-row player but with the right training I think I could be a pretty good front-row player," she said in a GNTC release. "She was planning on attending here and realized we had a volleyball team. She came to open gym, and from what she's shown, she's a great back-row player," Lady Bobcats coach Carrie Powell said. "She'll be a huge asset since we're losing quite a few back-row players and we're in need of a libero."

Climbing

* Spencer Chinery from Signal Mountain and the High Point climbing team finished second in the youth male D classification at the USA Climbing divisional competition this past weekend at High Point Climbing and Fitness in Chattanooga and qualified for the nationals July 9-12 in Kennesaw, Ga. Two girls who have trained under High Point coaches Lisa Rands and Wills Young also qualified: Emma Hunt from Woodstock, Ga., with a second place in youth female C and Tara Midha from the Atlanta area with a sixth in youth female D. Seven qualified out of each gender category. Midha works out of a gym close to her home but got private sessions from High Point's husband-wife duo the last couple of weeks before the divisional.

Golf

* Lauryn Roby and Bevin Harrill from Athens City Middle School were among 25 seventh- and eighth-grade golfers who made the Golf Coaches Association of Tennessee Middle School Scholar Athlete Team for the 2014-15 school year. Everyone honored had to have a grade point average of at least 3.7 on a 4.0 scale, earn a letter this past season, display high moral character and be nominated by a GCAT member coach.
