Around the Region: David Cunningham golden in National Veterans Wheelchair Games

David Cunningham of Wildwood, Ga., won two gold medals and a silver and just missed a bronze this past week in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Cincinnati. Cunningham, a 53-year-old U.S. Army veteran who was hurt in a hang gliding accident, competed in the H4 paraplegic category and finished fourth in air rifle, second in air pistol and first in 800-meter biathlon and 10-kilometer handcycle. The handcycle victory was Saturday morning. In the biathlon, competitors go 250 meters in a racing chair, stop and shoot, then race 400 meters and shoot again before finishing the course.

Running

- Christian Thompson broke his own record in repeating as the overall winner of the Scenic City Scorcher 2-mile road race Saturday morning on the North Shore. He finished in 9 minutes, 38.20 seconds after winning in 9:39.74 last year, and Lucas Cotter also broke 10 minutes with a 9:59.18 finish. Emily Bell edged Jessica Marlier as the fastest female, as they were 15th and 16th overall in 11:25.87 and 11:30.71. Chase Faudi, masters winner John Sillery and Ken Curran were third through fifth in 10:27.82, 10:33.56 and 10:34.36. Lisa Logan was the female masters winner in 13:39.59.
