Area sports notes: Jacob Wheeler finishes seventh in South Dakota tourney

Jacob Wheeler of Harrison finished seventh with 62 pounds, 1 ounce of smallmouth bass in the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament that wrapped up a four-day run Monday on Lake Oahe in South Dakota. He weighed 17-1 for his five-fish limit Monday. Mark Daniels Jr. of Tuskegee, Alabama, won by more than three pounds with his 69-9 total.

Golf

' Nicole Adam of Pinehurst, North Carolina, granddaughter of Red Bank residents Jim and Nancy Sims, was tied for second place in the junior girls' division after Monday's first round in the prestigious North & South Amateur golf tournament in her hometown. Adam and two others shot 74s on Pinehurst No. 2, one shot behind Bailey Dunstan of Little Rock, Arkansas. They'll play Pinehurst No. 6 today and Wednesday.

Soccer

' Forward Matheus Maia, midfielders Eemeli Makela and Keegan Weekley, defender Patrick Urey and goalkeeper Mats Pokela from state champion Baylor made the 2018 Division II-AA all-state team selected by the Tennessee soccer coaches, and forward Ben Brock, midfielder Thomas Priest and defender Jonah Bryan represented state runner-up McCallie on the 16-man team. Christian Brothers had four all-state players. A 52-player Class AAA team also was released, and it included forward Alexis Orozco from McMinn County and midfielders Samuel McDonald from Walker Valley, Justin Price from Rhea County, Casey Beck from Cleveland and Laith Abood from Ooltewah.

Cross Country

' Along with Ringgold High School track sprinter Sadie Lane, whose signing previously was reported, Cleveland State has added two other female runners and Dalton High's Derek Gallardo to its cross country rosters for this fall. The other girls are Ashton Frazier from Walker Valley and Alexis Kyle from Cleveland High. Kyle is the daughter of Cleveland State coach David Kyle."It's such an honor to be able to sign and coach my own child in college," he said. "I believe she will be a great asset to our team." Of Frazier he said, "We're very excited to bring Ashton onto the team. I'm very confident in her skills and potential, and I believe that she will make an immediate impact on our roster." Gallardo was Dalton's top runner and owns a 5-kilometer time of 16:24. "Derek was a great pick for our growing team. He will make a huge impact as a freshman," Coach Kyle said.
