East Ridge

The eyes of Tennessee's high school sports rules makers are on Texas.

In a move to help high school football players around the state get acclimated to the heat before full-contact practice begins, the TSSAA Board of Control has approved a recommendation to move up the date of the first day football teams can practice in helmets and shoulder pads by one week.

Memorable TSSAA Spring Fling performances by area athletes and teams

Shooters have to have a short memory, be it as a gunner on a basketball court or a goal scorer in soccer. They can't get consumed by their last miss.

If it's not broke ...

The East Ridge soccer Pioneers' offense gave them enough goals to survive in the state playoffs. Their defense gave them enough help to advance.

While traditional spring sports such as baseball, softball and track are winding down, the Southern tradition of spring football practice is just kicking off at many tri-state area schools.

Terrence Allen has been hired as the girls' basketball coach at East Ridge High School. He most recently taught at Hamilton High in Memphis.

East Hamilton coach Cara Stiles watched her team shake off some rust and then crush Red Bank 12-2 in five innings Tuesday in the District 6-AA softball tournament at Warner Park.

Hagen Wilkey already had pitched a no-hitter this season, yet Red Bank teammate Blake Winstead told the senior he had every intention of one-upping him.

* Liana Rodrigues, Arts & Sciences: A sixth-inning walk prevented her from pitching a perfect game against Boyd-Buchanan and she had 14 strikeouts for the Lady Patriots, who won 3-0 to move to 8-0 in District 5-A. They won the first district regular-season softball title in school history.

In the stroke of a single day, Bledsoe County went from being in position for its first district baseball championship in more than two decades to hosting a District 7-AA playoff game Thursday afternoon.

The District 6-AA high school softball game Tuesday at East Ridge went one inning longer than regulation, which went one inning longer than Hixson and Marissa Murray would've liked.

• Hannah Morrison, Marion County: She hit a home run in a 5-1 softball defeat of Whitwell.

* Thatcher Smith, Boyd-Buchanan: He was 4-for-5 with two RBIs in the Bucs' 8-7 baseball win over Silverdale.
