So who, besides me, bit the dust over the weekend?
Storyline: The Panthers came within a field goal of their first win last week at Red Bank, and they may be settling in offensively. Sam Caffey had a 300-yard passing game last week. Baylor will be their second Division II-AA opponent in three weeks, and the Red Raiders are coming off their first loss of the season. The Baylor offensive scheme is built around RB George Porter, who ranks second among area rushers. Sophomore Ryan Parker has been the Red Raiders' top defender, already with four sacks and five lost-yardage tackles.
So anybody want to talk about surprises?
This week’s high school football schedule
(Coaches are invited to make nominations. Send an email to Ward Gossett at email@example.com by 9 p.m. each Saturday.)
(All kickoffs are 7:30 p.m. Eastern unless noted)
A peek ahead: This is District 3-5A opener for both clubs, who have a common opponent already. Both lost to McCallie, the Blue Raiders 55-35 in Week 0 and McMinn 41-0 last week. Highlight performers are Cleveland QB Austin Herink, the southpaw that threw for 478 yards against McCallie and his top WR, versatile D.J. Jones, and Cherokees running back Dre Sanders.
Are Soddy-Daisy, Walker Valley and Chattanooga Christian looking back to enjoy the past two weeks or are they wise enough to put the past behind and focus on the immediate future?
(Coaches are asked to make nominations by 2 p.m. Sunday, submitting them to Ward Gossett at firstname.lastname@example.org or 423-886-4765).
Storyline: Webb is coming off a 35-20 loss to Maryville, while Baylor scored 39 points in the first 11 minutes of a 46-8 victory over Howard.
What a way to open the high school football season.
