Gordon Lee

With the first game of the 17th Tennessee-Georgia high school all-star doubleheader tied headed to the seventh inning, Dade County catcher Madison Lacy had one thing in mind.

On the surface it appears Ed Clendenen has stepped back, and while it's true the veteran high school coach will spend the 2014-15 school year in a seemingly lesser role in an unfamiliar surrounding, there is nothing that suggests he's slowing down.

Justin Hickman and Tyson Venable have played WindStone Golf Club at least 100 times between them, and maybe as many as 300, in their young lives.

Coaches and athletes in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia often lament the fact that there is very little in-season competition between area high school programs in the two states. The TSSAA and the GHSA are on different reclassification cycles, so scheduling interstate contests proves difficult.

In the athletic realm there is little the three major award winners from Thursday night's Best of Preps Banquet have in common except, obviously, success.

Four of the six finalists for this year's Scrappy Moore male Athlete of the Year award were multisport standouts, including one three-sport star. The finalists are Ringgold's Slade Dale, McCallie's C.J. Fritz, Baylor's Rafael Gaglianone, Dalton's Eder Mora, Gordon Lee's Jonathan Ragsdale and Meigs County's Levi Woods.

FOLKSTON, Ga. — As "We Are the Champions" blared from the sound system at the Charlton County High School baseball field and the home team was being mobbed on the pitcher's mound, the Gordon Lee Trojans huddled in near disbelief in right field.

Gordon Lee golfer Justin Hickman can boast, for the rest of his life, that he won a golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.

The LaFayette golf team has already established itself in the school record book. The Ramblers last won a region championship when most of this team was sporting diapers.

The biggest issue facing high school sports in more than a decade is still months from being decided, but if the Chattanooga area is any indication there is a clear consensus on the public-school/private-school debate.

Ashley McDonald sprinted down the first-base line after hitting a grounder to third base in a Gordon Lee softball game.

FOLKSTON, Ga. — The idea of a split of Saturday's doubleheader in the GHSA Class A public school baseball state championship series was certainly a possibility to Mike Dunfee. How it transpired, though, was far from what the Gordon Lee coach expected.

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. — Jake Rogers has tried for the past 12 months to forget about the way the 2013 baseball season ended.

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. — Gordon Lee will get another shot at a baseball state championship, and whichever team the Trojans face will have a lot to think about after seeing the scouting report from Monday's sweep of Treutlen County.

Baylor School has named boys' soccer coach Curtis Blair the director of soccer and head coach for both varsity teams, with Baylor alumni Leland Strang and Jennifer Clemmer joining the program. Strang, a 2002 Baylor graduate who has coached at rival Girls Preparatory School since 2010, will be the girls' associate head coach and work also with the boys' team.
