Rams man up, hold off Baylor

Nursing a narrow lead, with the clock winding down, Tyner boys' basketball coach Gerald Harris decided the time was right for a change.

The Rams had played zone defense throughout much of the game, and the entire second half, but switched to an aggressive man-to-man on Baylor's final possession. With Tyner players taking away any possible open look, Baylor burned more than 20 seconds off the clock before finally scoring with less than five seconds remaining.

By then, Tyner simply let the clock run out without having to inbound the ball and claimed a 43-40 victory in the opening round of the Best of Preps Tournament at Arts & Sciences.

"We had tried to mix up our zone a little bit to keep them from having open looks at 3-pointers," Harris said. "But at the end of the game my philosophy was to try to confuse them by going to a crunch-time man-to-man they hadn't seen from us.

"I think we had only played man for one possession in the first half before going zone the rest of the time. That last 30 seconds was the best man-to-man we've played all year."

Damian Suttles and Trey Suttles each finished with 10 points for the Rams, and Travis Jones added nine. Gavin Gibson led all scorers with 17 for Baylor, including five 3-pointers.
