GPS, Baylor prevail

Both tennis teams in D-II state tourney

The GPS and Baylor tennis teams showed that they were two of the top teams in the Division II-AA East Middle region during the season, claiming the top two seeds for the state playoffs.

Sunday reaffirmed their postseason placement.

Both teams qualified their entire six-player lineups for next week's state individual tournaments in the Division II-AA East/Middle Region Tournament at McCallie. Region champion GPS had two champions -- Sarah Evans in singles and Aliza Williams and Emma McCallie in doubles -- while Bronte Goodhue, Lauren Schlabach and Meredith Morrow also qualified.

Evans defeated Goodhue 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) in the singles final in a battle of teammates, while Schlabach and Morrow claimed fourth in doubles.

Williams, an eighth-grader, and the freshman McCallie defeated Baylor's Sarah Berchuck and Erika Marschall 6-2, 6-4.

The Lady Red Raiders' Katie Thornton and Kelly Scruggs took the fifth and final position in doubles, while eighth-grade sisters Samantha and Harper Caswell took the third and fourth seeds, respectively. Harper was a beneficiary of some poor planning, as Harpeth Hall's Caitlin Casey -- who would have played Samantha for third -- had to default due to a family trip.

Harper's 6-4, 6-7 (11-9), (10-2) victory over Harpeth Hall's Kat Caire -- her second consecutive three-set match -- gave her fifth place, but bumped her fourth seed.

"She's a little tired now," Baylor coach Ned Caswell said. "She played a nice match, though, and beat a good player."

Baylor's boys, who won their region tournament, claimed five spots for the state tournament. Alex Cooper and Carlos Cuevas were the doubles champions, defeating teammates Michael Goldstein and Aditya Rali 6-1, 6-4 in the final.

Anderson Scarpa took fourth place, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Ensworth's Rand Jackson.

"It's a little bit awkward to have an individual-based tournament this close to state," Coach Caswell said. "We've coached our teams together and have set a goal of two team state championships as our focus. We're trying to achieve that as a unit.

"It's great to accomplish individual things and would be great for one of these players to win a state title, but it won't mean as much as a title with the team."

McCallie had three players advance to the state tournament. Zeeshan Ismail claimed second, falling to Montgomery Bell Academy's Roger Briggs in a three-set final, while Scotty Webb and Logan Yerbey finished fourth in the doubles bracket.
