Arts & Sciences has hired former GPS and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga athlete Kristin Holloway as its softball coach.

Holloway, who graduated from UTC on Saturday, has limited coaching experience, most notably with track and cross country and some 12-under softball. That doesn't discourage athletic director Mark Dragoo, who had known Holloway previously because she did her student teaching at CSAS.

"No question she has the potential to be a very special coach," Dragoo said. "She has great enthusiasm and showed a lot of interest in that position. We asked her what she thought her strengths were, and we were really impressed with her answer when we asked what she thought were her weaknesses.

"She has the ability to look at herself. What she doesn't know, she's going to go and find it out."

Holloway, who was a middle infielder, will be assisted by her sister, Kaity, whose background is in pitching. Kristin said she thinks it's to her advantage being close to the age of the girls she'll be coaching because the issues that come with trying to deal with academics while playing a sport are fresh on her mind.

"I want the girls to focus on school," Holloway said. "When I met with them I told them I want 100 percent effort and 110 percent attitude. It's not just about going out there and throwing the ball around.

"I want to be a good role model for them. I've had ranges of coaches and I've had great examples."
