Ridgeland High School outfielder Kierra Coln parlayed a strong senior season into a softball scholarship, signing papers to attend Kennesaw State University at a ceremony Monday at Ridgeland.

Coln earned Class AAA all-state honors after batting .456 with 56 stolen bases for the Lady Panthers this past season. The speedy three-year starter became a slap-hitter as a sophomore and, according to her coach, should continue to master the art under Kennesaw coach Scott Whitlock.

"Kierra has only been a slapper for three years and she gets better every year," Ridgeland coach Scott Harden said. "Her speed is a big attraction at the next level and is what attracted Coach Whitlock to her."

Coln, who recently graduated with honors, was thrilled to get the chance to play at a Division I school.

"I have always wanted to go to school at Kennesaw State, so to have the opportunity to play ball for Coach Whitlock is just an added bonus," she said. "I love the school, the athletic department, facilities and the rich traditions at KSU. It will be a great fit for me."
