Rams' Dossett to play football at TSU

Tyner defensive end Kevin Dossett Jr. recently signed a letter of intent to continue his football career at Tennessee State University.

Dossett, a three-year starter who also played fullback for the Rams, was a Best of Preps second-team all-city defensive selection as a senior. At 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, he made 99 tackles, 12 sacks and two fumble recoveries last season. He also ran for five touchdowns and caught 15 passes for 150 yards and two TDs.

"I think Kevin will make them an excellent football player," Tyner coach Wayne Turner said. "He's always had an excellent work ethic and he's always been very coachable. He did a tremendous job for us the last three years."

Dossett, whose father played baseball for Middle Tennessee State, said the TSU coaches plan to use him at outside linebacker. He said he talked to a few Big Ten and Big 12 schools as well as Harvard and Yale during the recruiting process but liked TSU's coaches, tradition and relative proximity to home. He also liked that the Tigers play home games in the Titans' stadium.

"The opportunity to play on an NFL field is hard to pass up," he said. "And the coaches seemed like they really wanted me to be there."

TWC signs Mughal

On the brink of his senior baseball season at East Ridge, pitcher-infielder Sahadut Mughal signed Thursday to continue his career at Tennessee Wesleyan College, which reached the NAIA World Series last year.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound right-hander batted in the .400s and played shortstop and second base as well as being one of the top two pitchers for the Pioneers last season. He played this past fall for the Chattanooga Cyclones.

"He's a very versatile athlete. This year he'll play all six infield positions for me, including pitcher and catcher," East Ridge coach Lee Coffman said. "He's going to be a No. 3 hitter and should drive in a lot of runs in that spot. He hits the ball well to all fields.

"Wesleyan is getting a great kid. He's been a leader for us since he was a sophomore."

East Ridge hires Braswell

Former Baylor School star Cortney Braswell has joined the East Ridge football coaching staff as the defensive coordinator. He coached for three games at Soddy-Daisy last season before being let go.

"His knowledge of the game was impressive, and I believe he will be a good fit with the players we have," Pioneers coach Mike Martin said. "He's a hard worker, I know that much already, and with the personnel we have coming back, his style will help us make the switch to a three-man front."

Duncan makes SI

McCallie School senior and Maryland signee T.J. Duncan is in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the March 7 Sports Illustrated for his Tennessee-record fifth state wrestling championship. Duncan's opponent in the 2011 160-pound Division II final, Spencer Craig of Baylor, also is mentioned.
