Lady Chargers cruise into state

With only a match or two left in her Chattanooga Christian tennis coaching career, Sue Webb is trying to enjoy as many good times as possible.

Count Thursday as one of them.

Her Lady Chargers defeated Boyd-Buchanan 4-0 at the Brainerd courts to advance to the Class A/AA state tournament next week in Murfreesboro.

Webb, who will begin coaching the boys' and girls' programs at Covenant College next season, was pleased by the fast starts her team had. The four singles winners lost a total of eight first-set games.

"I thought we really got off to quick starts today," Webb said. "Boyd put up a good fight, but we've been practicing and training hard for this, and I thought we had a lot of intensity from the start."

Ellie and Hannah Henry, Gretchen Rowe and Gracie Smith recorded the victories for the Lady Chargers (12-3), who weren't dealt any favors for the state tournament when they drew 2010 state runner-up Christian Academy of Knoxville.

Smith had the clinching win at No. 5 singles by defeating Paige Zumbrun 6-2, 6-4.

"I think she started to get a little tight in the second set, but she showed a lot of composure and fought back and held on to get the win," Webb said.

"We have a lot of depth this year; we've had some competitive practices. But I think it shows that we've got good depth, and I hope that we can use that to our advantage next week."
