Baylor QB in charge

Matthew Oellerich had an above average game against Montgomery Bell Academy but the Baylor quarterback has been besting his averages most of the year.

"It was a typical game for him," Baylor coach Phil Massey said. "He has progressed. He made good reads and he was very patient in the pocket. He had a really good football game."

Entering the game, the senior was averaging 81.4 rushing yards and 113.8 passing yards.

"I don't think there's any question that Matthew was a big standout offensively," Massey said. "He was 9-for-13 in the first half. He did have an interception but it came on a ball that was tipped."

Oellerich passed for two TDs and 151 yards, completing 13 of 19 passes, and also rushed for 104 yards in his team's 20-10 victory over MBA and earned Times Free Press Player of the Week honors.

He also again answered the critics who wondered aloud who would fill graduated Jacob Huesman's shoes and how.

"He picked up where Jacob left off, and we haven't missed a beat," Massey said.

And Friday was a typical performance.

"We have put him in a position to make plays and he made them," the coach said. "He put us in a position to win the football game, especially late in the second half when we were trying to put the game away."

Oellerich probably has surpassed many expectations but he hasn't exceeded those of the coaching staff.

"I knew what kind of athlete he was and what kind of competitor he is," Massey said. "It doesn't matter what position he's at. He's going to give you everything he's got and he's going to succeed. He has done really well but I expected that. He wanted to be a quarterback at Baylor and when given that opportunity I expected him to blow the doors off, which he has done.

"With his determination, intensity and athleticism, yeah, I could easily seen him being as successful as he has been."
