Bruisers bruise Brentwood Academy

GPS opened postseason play in the Division II-AA volleyball sub-state Saturday with a convincing 3-0 victory over Brentwood Academy at GPS.

The Bruisers won 25-10, 25-13, 25-19.

"It was good to get that first game under our belt, and that momentum carried over," GPS coach Paul Brock said. "We did a little bit of subbing in the later games, so the scores were a little bit closer. Typically you don't want to do that when you start playing for the state tournament because you don't want to risk any change in momentum, but I was very pleased with the outcome."

Brock said Sara Griffith had her best match of the season with 14 kills, three blocks and nine digs. Olivia Berger led in digs with 14 and Sadie Lett led in assists with 18. Jeneh Perry's six blocks and Mary Margaret Taylor's five aces were other highs.

GPS (35-17) will play next Saturday at St. Benedict with the winner advancing to Murfreesboro for the state semifinals. The Bruisers lost to St. Benedict in a best-of-three match in a tournament recently, but Brock said they weren't at full strength and didn't play well.

"The first game we got blown out," Brock said. "The second game we had two chances at game point and ended up losing 26-24.

"We'll go back and analyze the tape, use stats and figure out what adjustments we need to make. It should be a good match."
