Softball playoffs postponed locally

Seven Northwest Georgia softball teams will have to wait to punch their ticket to the elite eight in Columbus after each of their second-round playoff series was postponed due to rain Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

Three of the teams will host doubleheaders today in the best-of-three series. Northwest Whitfield (25-6) hosts Pope (24-6) in Class AAAA at 5:30, while Region 7 champion Heritage (27-7) welcomes Columbus (26-7) at 5:30 and Ringgold (22-11) travels to Region 6 champion Carrollton (23-7) at 4:30 in Class AAA.

Three area teams remain alive in Class AA. Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (22-10) visits top-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian (29-6) at 5, third-year program North Murray (18-13) travels to second-ranked Buford (27-10) at 5 and surprising Fannin County (19-14) hosts Region 6 four-seed Lovett (23-7) at 5.

Gordon Lee (31-1), the defending Class A champion and the prohibitive favorite to repeat, welcomes Athens Christian (19-6) at 4. Each series would continue Friday with a deciding game three if necessary.
