McCallie stuns Rams with 52-13 rout

It has been a bizarre couple of weeks. From record-setting heat to record-setting rain, to earthquakes and hurricanes, the improbable keeps on turning to possible.

Well, add another to the list of signs that the world is ending.

McCallie was deadly efficient in a 52-13 pounding of a proud Tyner program Friday night, sending the Rams reeling to their first 0-3 start since 1987. And they should feel fortunate this one counted as only one loss.

So convincing was the win that the stadium clock ran continuously in the fourth quarter, something Tyner is used to seeing, but not from that vantage point.

"I've known [Tyner] Coach [Wayne] Turner a long time and we've had some great games," Blue Tornado coach Bubba Simmons said. "Am I surprised? Yeah, but I also knew we had a great week and these seniors on this team have really pushed the team. They wanted to play a full 48 minutes tonight, because we didn't quite do that last week."

McCallie (2-1) needed just two plays to get its first score, cornerback Chase Marsh stepping in front of an errant Tyner pass and returning it 37 yards 50 seconds into the game. The Rams settled down temporarily, going 80 yards in 14 plays, but a blocked extra point left them down 7-6, and the Tornado were just getting warmed up.

McCallie scored on its next four possessions before halftime, and the only thing up in the air was whether kicker Arturo Rocha was going to need oxygen before the night was over. Rocha was good on all seven PATs, kicked a 35-yard field goal and sailed all nine of his kickoffs through the end zone.

Of the 57 plays run in the first half, all but nine of them were played on McCallie's side of the field. Quarterback Trent Lusk was deadly accurate, finishing 9-of-11 for 189 yards, including TD strikes to Samir Usman (19 yards) and Sam Berry (32 yards).

Tailback Daniel McClure scored on runs of 2, 23 and 7 yards as McCallie went to the dressing room up 35-6. McClure wound up with 93 yards on 17 totes and one catch for 32 yards.

"We've played on our side of the field all year, and tonight was no different," said Turner, who never previously was 0-3 at Tyner. "Turnovers and inconsistency."

Tyner had two turnovers in the game and now has 13 on the young season.

The Big Blue defense gave up the 80-yard drive and an 84-yard pass play but allowed just 92 yards on the other 48 plays.
