Signal's girls, Irish win region

The Chattanooga area has a lock on the Region 4-A/AA golf championships.

For a third straight year, the Signal Mountain girls' team and the boys from Notre Dame won region championships Friday and will compete for state titles.

The Lady Eagles won with a 12-over-par 152 on the par-70 Cookeville Golf Club with senior Sarah Dolmovich earning medalist honors with a 75 and Haley Davidson adding a 77.

"The girls came through when they needed to," said coach Rodney Mitchell, who had a drop score of 80 from Andi Fisher that would've been fifth. "They both shot in the 70s after alternating throughout the year.

"They've been there before, so they stayed focused throughout the round and finished strong."

Signal defeated DeKalb County by three strokes, and Chattanooga Christian came in third with a 170.

CCS sophomore Anna Pope earned her first invitation to the state championship Sept. 27-28 at Willowbrook Golf Club in Manchester by shooting an 82.

"Anna was about to explode when she learned she got in," CCS coach Don Holwerda said. "She told me yesterday that she loved the course, and she proved it."

The Notre Dame boys had little trouble Friday and even less competition. The Irish shot an 8-over 288 and won by 26 strokes over Livingston Academy.

DeKalb placed third at 315, CCS finished fourth at 318 and Signal Mountain was fifth at 320.

"The good thing about this team is that they're balanced and brother-in-law each other," Notre Dame coach Jeff Fisher said. "This is probably one of the most balanced teams I've taken to state."

The Irish had two of the top five scores with Kyle Holley shooting 68 and finishing runner-up to Peyton Broyles of Jackson County by two shots. Fellow senior David Weeks shot 70 for the Irish, whose drop score was a 77.

"Kyle could have shot 65, but he hit a 'No Carts' sign and a pine cone in the fairway," Fisher said. "It's the perfect present for his 18th birthday."

Signal Mountain senior Blake Boerger finished third in the medalist race with a 69 and will head to state for a third straight year. CCS sophomore Scott Stevens shot 72 and will make his first appearance in the state championship.
