The weather won.
Heavy rains at Lake Tansi Golf Club stopped play twice in the Region 3-AAA golf tournament and eventually suspended the round, forcing all participants to return today.
"The course was unplayable," Soddy-Daisy coach Kevin Templeton said. "It started with brutal conditions, heavy winds; then the rain came in and the greens were pooling.
"It got to a point where there were lakes on the greens and bunkers were full of water."
Play will resume this morning at 9 CDT. No one finished play Monday, but Templeton said that at least one group is playing the 18th hole and almost all groups have made the turn.
But tournament officials did not post at-the-turn scores.
"Just guessing -- we think we are two shots down to Walker Valley and we're not sure about Cookeville, but it's about the same thing, we think," McMinn County coach Jerry Quirk said. "We didn't play very well on the front nine, but nobody was.
"In situations like that, it takes the better teams back to the ones not as good. When a guy I know can shoot 72 six-putts, that's not right."
The winning teams -- boys' and girls' -- plus the top four individuals not on those teams advance to the state championship next week at Willowbrook Golf Club in Manchester.
"I think the girls were tied with White County and the boys are up a couple on Cookeville and McMinn," Walker Valley coach Bob Williams said. "I hate that they couldn't keep going and have to miss another day of school."
