CLEVELAND, Tenn. - His eyes were bleary because it has been a long week for Jim Higgins, Soddy-Daisy's rookie wrestling coach.
His wife gave birth to a son Tuesday, and his Trojans posted victories over Hixson on Tuesday and over Cleveland on Thursday. On Saturday they presented him with his first tournament championship.
"I'm really looking forward to a nap," Higgins said following the final match of the Bradley Central Invitational. "Did we win it? I didn't even know."
The Trojans entered the medal-round matches -- for first, third and fifth places -- with a two-point lead over Alabama power Scottsboro and exited with 193 points, nine better than the runner-up Wildcats, who are their state's Class 5A defending champions.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 27-team field were Walker Valley, Bradley Central, Maryville Heritage, Whitewater, Ga., Maryville, Hoover, Ala., East Ridge and Gordon Lee.
Soddy-Daisy, which was without defending state champion Jacob Stevens (120) and 2012 state runner-up Blaike Henry (182), had two winners in Tucker Russo (126) and Turbo Smith (152), a runner-up in Jake McClure (106) and seven medalists.
Smith was named the tournament's best wrestler after defeating Scottsboro's Chase McClure, a four-time state medalist and the 2011 Bradley Invitational best wrestler award winner. The Trojans' Gage Richmond, who finished third at 145, won the tournament's most pins award.
Though it was his first tournament championship as a head coach, Higgins had no plans to acquire a case to house the trophy.
"The kids can take it. They did it. I'm just a noise-maker and motivator," he said.
The Trojans' plan entering the tournament was simply to get as much of a workout as possible.
"We came up here without a full lineup, and we wanted to be competitive and get in some good matches against good competition," Higgins said.
Other area champions were Bradley's Toribio Navarro (106) and Dakota Bromley (120), Walker Valley's Caleb Langford (138) and Billy Raulston (195) and Dalton's Sydney Wheeler (182).
Walker Valley's third place was the first time the Mustangs have finished ahead of Bradley Central. The Mustangs rallied past the Bears in the medals round.
"What a round we had," Walker Valley coach Alan Morris said. "Overall we had some guys that didn't meet expectations, some that didn't and some that went beyond expectations. Our first goal is to win tournaments, but with a 27-team field finishing third is a good accomplishment and definitely something to build on."
