Ooltewah running back Desmond Pittman started the 2012 high school football season as a backup. He didn't take over as the Owls' starter until the sixth game of the season, and then only because of injury. But the 5-foot-10, 220-pound junior responded by rushing for more than 1,300 yards, helping lead Ooltewah to the Class 5A quarterfinals and becoming an all-state player.

Pittman was one of two area Class 5A players to be named all-state by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association, joined by Cleveland defensive back C.J. Bryant. Two other area players -- Bradley Central offensive lineman Austin Sanders and McMinn County defensive lineman Aaron Kimpson -- earned all-state recognition in Class 6A.

"Once we as coaches figured out what our strengths were as a team, we decided to just keep giving Desmond the ball," Owls coach Shannon Williams said. "He had a huge impact on our season, obviously, and we wouldn't have gone as far as we did without him."

In only his second game as the offensive focus, Pittman responded with 200-plus yards on 32 carries against Bradley.

Cleveland's Bryant had five interceptions during the season.

Sanders, a University of Tennessee commitment, became Bradley's first Mr. Football award winner and is now a two-time all-state selection. Kimpson led the area with 15 sacks and had 23 tackles for loss for the Cherokees.

"Kimpson was just a beast against us," Bradley coach Damon Floyd said. "He had six sacks against us in one game, so the next time we played them [a week later in the playoffs], we moved Austin over to block him and try to slow him down.

"Obviously Austin has been pretty big for our program for a while. He works so hard to earn what he's being recognized for now. I feel blessed to have gotten to coach a kid like him."
