GPSA concept on hold as GHSA meets today

The proposed Georgia Public School Association did not make any major moves during a called meeting Monday in Macon, according to advisory committee member and Gordon Lee associate athletic director Greg Ellis.

The GPSA, established as an alternative athletic organization to the Georgia High School Association for schools seeking to break away from competing against private schools, will wait until after the GHSA discusses the issue today at its regularly called reclassification meeting.

Ellis said 38 schools were represented Monday in Macon, and though the issue mainly concerns rural Class A schools, several Class AA and AAA programs also were represented.

"We basically just went over the bylaws covering fall sports and gave them some information to take back to their school boards," Ellis said. "We want to wait and see if anything changes with the GHSA. They're going to have to do something about the public-private issue and it's on their agenda for Tuesday's meeting, which is a positive development."

According to Ellis, if the GHSA does not offer a solution to the issue, the GPSA likely will come to fruition. The GPSA wants the GHSA to split public schools from private schools for postseason competition, something the GHSA has been unwilling to discuss.

Ellis also said that, even if schools elect to leave the GHSA, Gordon Lee will not be among them.

"It's just not feasible for us to do anything," he said. "The best we can hope for is the GHSA will do something about it Tuesday."

The GPSA has tentatively scheduled a meeting for Jan. 24 if the issue is not resolved.
