Basketball

• Recent Sonoraville High School graduates Tre-Vaughn Bostic and Tavish Reynolds will be continuing their basketball careers at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. Reynolds, a 6-foot point guard, was the leading scorer for the Phoenix as a senior, and the 6-3 Bostic had 27 points and 13 rebounds in a win over LaFayette and is Sonoraville's all-time leading rebounder. "We are hoping to take a lot of his athleticism and speed and turn him into a slasher of sorts," Bobcats coach David Stephenson said, adding that Reynolds "has a great shot" in the competition to replace Matt Woods at the point. "I really like what Coach [Brent] Mashburn is doing and hope this is just the beginning of a pipeline of student-athletes from Sonoraville to Georgia Northwestern." Mashburn said the two new Bobcats "are both great young men who do what they are supposed to on and off the court. They really meant a lot to our team."

General

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga athletes as a group tied a program record with an aggregate 2.97 grade point average for the spring semester. This was the fourth successive term in which the Mocs and Lady Mocs posted at least a 2.92 and the sixth semester in a row in which more than half the athletes made the athletic director's honor roll with 3.0 or better GPAs. "I am very proud of the work of our student-athletes in the classroom," AD Rick Hart said in a school release. "Our program has a clearly stated vision of establishing comprehensive excellence as the UTC standard, and this is another example of how we are working toward that goal."
