Triplett, Bates victors in State Women's Am and other sports reports

GALLATIN, Tenn. -- Former GPS golfer Mary Alice Murphy of Lookout Mountain and Baylor School player Blakesly Warren of Chattanooga lost Thursday in the championship flight quarterfinals of the Tennessee Women's State Amateur Championship at Foxland Harbor Golf Course, but Benton's Lydia Triplett won the second flight with a 4 and 3 defeat of Mount Juliet's Julie Marr and Decherd resident Stacie Bates took the third flight with a 1-up win over Hendersonville's Caroline Welch. Pam Morrow of Athens, who had lost her opening match to Bates, lost the third-flight consolation final to Lebanon's Rhonda Manous. Kingsport high schooler Lacie York edged Murphy 1 up but lost 1 up in the semifinal against Austin Peay's Ashley Averitt of Oakland, Tenn., who had beat Warren 3 and 1. Defending champion Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City lost 1 up to All-America Vanderbilt teammate Lauren Stratton of Spring Hill in the other top-flight semifinal. Stratton and Averitt square off this morning for the championship.

Baseball

• Former Baylor School standout Tyler Massey has been named to the South squad for the South Atlantic League baseball all-star game June 19 in Charleston, S.C. Massey, who is batting .331 for the Asheville (N.C.) Tourists, has .534 slugging and .431 on-base percentages. He has seven home runs, two triples and eight doubles and batted in 33 runs. He was drafted in 2008.

• Former Walker Valley High School pitcher Ryan Fraser has moved up in the New York Mets' farm system. The right-hander has advanced from Class A Port St. Lucie to AA Binghamton, N.Y. He had a 3-2 record with a 2.08 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 31 innings for Port St. Lucie.

• The Chattanooga Baseball Club 14-under team won last week's East Tennessee Children's Hospital USSSA tournament in Knoxville with an 11-6 defeat of Diamond Baseball/Simcox Academy. CBC earlier had a 7-1 win over the RBI Rangers but pulled out extra-inning victories against the Morse Mustangs of Lexington, Ky., (9-8), the Knoxville Hurricanes (3-2) and the Knoxville Aces (8-5). Dalton Rogers struck out six batters in eight innings pitched, allowed just two hits and one earned run and got two wins, and he was 6-for-16 with five RBIs. Tyler Blum, Ethan Dalton and Matt Watters also were winning pitchers, and Dalton went 5-for-10 with five RBIs while Watters drove in seven runs. Travis Aikman also had five RBIs, and Jordan Ransom and Kyle Cox scored seven and six. The CBC 14s are 9-0 with two tournament titles going into this weekend's Perfect Game/East Cobb Invitational.

Basketball

• Jordan Robinson from Mountain View Christian Academy in Bryant, Ala., has signed enrollment papers to continue his basketball career at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. The 6-foot-6 forward was the most valuable player in the eight-school Southern Christian Athletic Association postseason tournament after averaging double-figure points and rebounds in the event. Mountain View's Lions finished 19-5. "Jordan is a good young man with his priorities in order," Bobcats coach David Stephenson said in a GNTC release. "He's ahead of the game when it comes to his attitude for a student-athlete coming straight out of high school." Robinson said he was excited about GNTC's computer information systems program as well as the chance to play NJCAA basketball.

Soccer

• The Express 97 girls, part of the East Ridge Soccer Club, edged Tennessee United 1-0 on a Peyton Rauth goal in the Division 2 state tournament in Murfreesboro. That culminated a weekend with no goals allowed by the Express, who advance to the Southeastern Regionals in Greensboro, N.C. Other team members are Brittany Allison, Courtney Boyd, Baylee Burk, Rachel Carter, Liz Ciabattone, Haylee Conerly, Makelah Elsea, Taylor Green, Bishop Hill, Lydia Lee, Jess Lyons, Mallorie Meneley, Gabby Mullins, Alyssa Newton and Maddie Robbins. Dean Wilson is their coach.
