COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. -- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Steven Fox of Hendersonville, the defending champion, reached today's semifinals in the Tennessee Match Play Championship at Spring Creek Ranch after winning two matches Thursday, and Tom Baird of Signal Mountain also won twice and is playing for the senior division championship. Baird beat Ron Waters of Alcoa 1 up in the quarterfinals and went 19 holes to defeat Brentwood's Blake Watt in the semifinals, when Germantown's Larry Dupree won 2 up over Chattanooga's Neil Spitalny. Spitalny defeated another Germantown resident, Jack Ramsey, 5 and 4 in the quarterfinals. In the main amateur division, Fox won 3 and 2 over both Matt Mitchell of Olive Branch, Miss., and Tennessee Tech senior Lee Maxwell of Cookeville, who edged UTC's Alex Ratliff of Kingsport in 19 holes. Germantown's Tim Jackson, a member of The Honors Course in Ooltewah, downed Chattanooga's Ryan Thornton 3 and 1 and then rolled to a 6 and 4 defeat of Knoxville's Hayden Anderson. • MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Baylor School golf teammates Blakesly Warren and Lauren Johnson qualified for the U.S. Girls' Championship to be played July 16-21 at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif., which is outside San Francisco. Warren, a rising junior, and Johnson, a rising senior, each shot 5-over-par 77 at Old Fort Golf Course and survived a four-way playoff for three spots.
• ACWORTH, Ga. -- Mary Alice Murphy of Lookout Mountain won the first flight and was second overall in the Georgia Top 60 Women's Classic that concluded Thursday at Governors Towne Club. Murphy, a former Girls Preparatory golfer now playing for Mercer University, followed her first-round 73 with a 70 to finish at 1-under-par 143, three shots behind Emily Kurey of Alpharetta. They were the only two participants under par for the tournament. Lisa Ann Sellers of Rocky Face was fourth in the third flight at 159, and Rochelle Weaver of Resaca and Sue King of Chatsworth were seventh and eighth in the fourth flight at 172 and 174.

• Led by Alexis Wilson with four first-place finishes in the 13-14 girls' age group, the Chattanooga Jets qualified 43 athletes for 72 individual events and six relays in the USATF Junior Olympic Region 6 meet July 5-8 at Middle Tennessee State University with their Tennessee Association performances last weekend at Brentwood High School. Wilson won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and the long jump. The Jets' Hollis Edwards had two firsts and a third in 11-12 boys, Marcus Hudson had two firsts and a fifth in 13-14 boys, and Patrick Taylor and Imen Isang in 17-18 boys, Chancis Jones in 17-18 girls, Cahlib Edwards in 11-12 boys and Deyonna Lansden in 9-10 girls each had a first and a second in individual events.
