Baylor School girls first at Jesse Owens Classic

The Baylor girls' cross country team won the silver division of the Jesse Owens Classic in Moultrie, Ala., this past weekend. Led by Ruthie Townsend's sixth-place finish, the Lady Red Raiders accumulated 107 points, 11 ahead of Chiles High from Florida.

Baylor's Haley Chandler placed 13th. Cleveland's Beka Day finished 16th.

McCallie finished sixth in the gold elite boys' division, led by Ramsay Ritchie's seventh-place finish, one spot ahead of Bradley Central's Harold Smith. McCallie's Derek Barnes and Bradley's Paul Patterson were 13th and 14th.

McMinn County and Rhea County were in the gold elite girls' race, with McMinn's Haley Ward finishing 14th. Rhea was led by Gloria Pascual's 37th-place run and had a 12th-place team finish.

Baylor's Erin Garmany was fourth and the Lady Red Raiders placed second in the Red Division.

The Baylor boys' cross country team finished fourth in the 3A division of the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic near Orlando, Fla.

The Red Raiders' Simon Holden won the five-kilometer event in 16 minutes, 6.59 seconds. Dillon Clemmer was 13th and Alex Sumida took 20th as Baylor placed in the top five despite not having John Carlson, who was gone on a family vacation, and Sam Stewart, who was resting a hurt back.

Even on vacation, Baylor freshmen Grace and John Carlson spent quality time running.

They competed in the Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix race in Williamsburg, Va., and Grace finished second in the 10-kilometer event with a time of 43:53. In the boys' race, John finished fifth and set a 14-year-old age-group record with his 39:30.
