Heritage gets split at Madison County

Heritage's softball team split its doubleheader Wednesday against Madison County at Danielsville in a round-of-16 Class AAAA state-playoff series. The Generals won the opener 6-0 but lost the second game 5-4.

Heritage (27-7-1) will play at Madison County again today in the deciding game with the winner advancing to the state tournament at Columbus.

Lauren Lawson was the winning pitcher for the Generals. Adding what she threw in relief in the second game, Lawson pitched 11 scoreless innings on the day, allowing five hits.

Savannah Goldsmith went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in Heritage's victory. Lawson was 2-for-4 and scored three runs and Taylor Moran was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Olivia Tamewitz was 3-for-4 in the Generals' loss.

Dalton's season over

Host Columbus swept Dalton 8-2 and 7-6 in its best-of-three Class AAAA series in the round of 16.

Destinee Woods and Hannah Jones had two RBIs each and Carson Hagin had a double in the close loss.

Blakely Thomason drove in a run for Dalton in the 8-2 loss.
