Ringgold senior Austin Parrish has committed to play baseball for Georgia State University.

The outfielder and pitcher was a key contributor to the Tigers' run to a state-runner-up finish last season in Class AAA with a .342 batting average, eight homers, 36 RBIs and 33 runs scored.

On the mound Parrish was 8-0 with a 3.00 earned run average. He won two deciding games in the playoffs and heads into the upcoming season as the team's No. 1 starting pitcher.

"Austin is a hard worker, does great in the classroom and is a leader on the field," Ringgold coach Brent Tucker said. "Because of his work ethic, Austin will always be successful on and off the field."

Parrish said Georgia State recruited him as a pitcher but promised to keep up him next spring with the idea of possibly letting him play both ways. He has played for strong Atlanta-area club teams and said his fall coach connected him with Greg Frady's staff at the Atlanta university.

"I loved the coaches down there," Parrish said, "and once they looked at me they were interested. I went down there and loved it, and that was it."

SAS hosts playoff

The St. Andrew's-Sewanee eight-man football team team finished the regular season 8-2 overall and tied for first place in the Middle Tennessee Athletic Conference with a 4-1 league record. Having beat co-champion Christian Community, the Mountain Lions will host a first-round playoff game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CDT against Aaron Academy.

Senior quarterback Kendall Kinslow has run for 1,427 yards, 28 touchdowns and 19 two-point conversions -- a total of 206 points -- and has passed for 821 yards and 13 TDs. Two other seniors, center/defensive end Tyler Privette and end/linebacker Robert Post will be five-year letter winners.
