Boyd-Buchanan Buccaneers
Coach: Grant Reynolds (63-27 in his ninth year here and overall)
Last year: 12-2, lost 27-6 to Friendship Christian in a state semifinal
'13 dreams: Reynolds said the Bucs have some talented players this year, but many of them are young. For instance, eight new starters will appear on defense. Skill positions are a team strength. Team speed is more than adequate. "Hopefully by the end we're playing our best," Reynolds said. "We're not ever going to compromise our goals of winning a district championship and winning a state championship. That's what we're striving for." Jim Cardwell (5-foot-9, 180) contributes at safety and as a kickoff and punt returner, but his primary duty is quarterback, where he'll be starting for a fourth year. Junior Austin Jackson (6-0, 210) is expected to play key roles at both running back and linebacker. Guard and defensive tackle Eli Legg (6-0, 225) got valuable playing time last season as a freshman.
Number of interest: It was 2008 the last time the Buccaneers lost to a league opponent, 13 games ago.
13 years ago: Reynolds was the defensive coordinator on the first Boyd-Buchanan team to advance as far as a state semifinal.
1-through-3: Senior quarterback, safety and kick returner Jim Cardwell
Q. Having been a starter at quarterback the last three years, what are your thoughts entering your final prep season?
A. It flew by real fast. It seems like yesterday I was playing with Ross Keesler and all those guys. It was my first year. Now it just seems like it flew right by.
Q. With your father, Carter, being your offensive coordinator throughout your high school career, what has that been like?
A. He always wants me to do the best I can. He's always told me, "You can be a regular high school kid and go through the motions and just be average, or I've done this for 35 years and I know what it takes, and if you want to do it, let me know. Either way I'll support you." So I said, "Let's do it."
Q. What's been the most memorable thing about wearing a Buccaneers football uniform?
A. I think my favorite part is just being with the guys, goofing off in the locker room and hanging out with them. I especially remember last year's group. We did everything together.
