Sequatchie County's Katie Brock earns state title

Sequatchie County freshman Katie Brock won a state championship this past weekend at the Tennessee girls' invitational wrestling tournament in Franklin.

The 120-pounder finished the year with 18 pins and a 23-1 record. She won tournaments at Halls and Science Hill and also placed first in the East Region tournament.

The girls' state tournament is held in conjunction with the traditional state tournaments for boys in Division I and Division II. While girls' wrestling enjoyed growth initially, there have been about 130 participants the past three years and the TSSAA still has not sanctioned it.

A proposal from Division I coaches is to move the girls' traditional tournament to the weekend of the guys' dual tournaments. Another proposal that was discussed, at least among some coaches, was that the girls' tournament be moved to a high school so it can build a stronger foundation and following.

Hall makes Youtube

In what could be the last home game in his Silverdale Baptist Academy basketball career, John Hall was 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point line last Thursday in the Seahawks' 68-60 victory over Copper Basin in the first boys' game in the District 5-A tournament. And one of those shots was maybe even a little out of his range.

Hall rebounded a missed shot by the Cougars in the waning seconds of the third quarter. Afterward, he got as far as one step beyond the free-throw line on the far end and let loose with a heave.

"I rebounded the ball, turned around and they said, 'Shoot it,'" said Hall, who had the Silverdale student section in the bleachers right across the baseline when he came down with the ball. "I took a couple of dribbles and let it go. I gave it a little prayer while it was in the air, and it went in."

A video of the shot is available on Youtube, although it's listed as "John Hall's halftime buzzer-beater."
