The boys' singles championships of the Tennessee State Junior Qualifying tennis tournament at the Champions Club went according to seedings, with No. 1 defeating No. 2 in both the 18s and 16s finals Tuesday.
The top seeds won also in girls' doubles, but the fourth seed won in singles in each female age group.
Skylar McDonald of Fayetteville added to her Class A/AA high school state championship by defeating second-seeded Josie Rogers of Kingsport 6-4, 6-4 in the Girls' 16s final of the USTA event leading to Southern Sectional play, and 14-year-old Danielle Vines of Elizabethton completed her run to the 18s title by downing a No. 5 seed, Iris Hao of Franklin, 6-3, 6-1.
No. 2 seed Anna Feaster of Knoxville beat Chattanooga's Harper Caswell 6-4, 6-0 in the 18s third-place match. Top-seeded Claire Sullivan of Memphis finished third in the 16s with a tiebreaker win after she and Vines won the 16s doubles title as the No. 1 seeds against 3 seeds Nithya Kanagasegar of Crossville and Rogers.
McCallie School player Cody Gubin from Memphis won in doubles and took third place in singles in Boys' 18s, where Lakeland's top-seeded Jarryd Woog beat No. 2 Andrew Graham of Nashville 6-3, 6-3 for the championship. Gubin, the fourth seed, edged No. 3 Andy Druffel of Nashville 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(6) after teaming with Marshall Sullivan to nip Jacob and Michael Birnbaum 9-8(5) in an all-Memphis doubles final.
No. 1 Steven Karl of Brentwood beat No. 2 Michael Apple of Memphis 6-2, 6-0 in the Boys' 16s singles final. Apple also was the doubles runner-up with Paul LaHue of Cordova, falling as the top seeds to the No. 2 duo of Germantown's Andres Carro and Franklin's Adam Rudowski. Rudowski was third in singles.
