Calhoun golf coach Clay Stevenson and North Murray coach Keith Robinette can't be in the same place at once today with boys' and girls' teams playing for their respective state championships.
But Trion coach Doug Wilson is going to do his best not to get a speeding ticket driving between coaching his girls' team and junior John Rollins, who advanced to the Class A tournament as an individual.
"I won't be speeding," Wilson said over the phone.
Stevenson will coach the girls' team at Hawks Point Golf Club in Vidalia while his assistant coaches the Yellow Jackets across town at Rocky Creek Golf Club. Dade County will join them there.
"He's the middle school coach, and he's known most of the seniors since then and he's closer to them," Stevenson said. "I've the girls for all the years they've been playing golf.
"They have a chance of winning for sure because they've got one of the top four region scores."
Robinette will coach his girls' team on the Chateau Elan Chateau Course in Braselton, while his assistant coaches senior Colby Hipp who is headed to Emory next fall to play golf.
"Coming out of region, our girls were right there and I'd love to hit the 270 [counting three scores] and have a chance," said Robinette, who will have Jocelyn Blair leading his team. "And I know Colby will play his tail off."
And Rollins will be hustling his tail between John Rollins at Double Oaks Golf Club in Commerce to Highland Walk Golf Course in Royston where there girls' team will be competing, among others, Gordon Lee for the sixth time this season.
Gordon Lee coach Jared Willerson's Lady Trojans have prevailed over the Lady Bulldogs in four of the five close competitions. He expects another close match. And perhaps another state championship to match the 2008 trophy.
"It's Gordon Lee and Trion, so it's contentious," Willerson said. "Golf isn't like football or baseball, but the girls are competitive and want to beat each other."
