COLUMBUS, Ga. - It took nearly three decades, so when Alyssa Shawgo struck out the final batter of the GHSA Class AA softball championship game Saturday, Calhoun coach Diane Smith took a moment to soak it all in. The Lady Yellow Jackets (33-6) defeated Harlem 7-0 to complete a perfect postseason and hand Smith that elusive title.

"It feels awesome," Smith said. "I've been waiting on this for 27 years, and we've come close so many times. These girls just know what it takes to win and they've worked all year for this. I'm just so proud of them, and this is for every girl that's ever played softball at Calhoun."

Shawgo, one of two Calhoun seniors, pitched a one-hitter and struck out five, retiring the final 13 batters. Taylor Kelly got her all the runs she would need with a two-run double in the first inning. Freshman leadoff hitter Ryan Brzozoski was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, Ashlyn Barnes added a pair of hits and an RBI and the team's other senior, Wimberly Roe, capped the scoring with her seventh homer of the season.

Shawgo, at ease after the early outburst, took care of the rest.

"It's the best feeling I've ever had playing softball these past 13 years," she said. "Getting those early runs made it so much easier and took a lot of pressure off me. This is the best we've played all season, and everybody stayed up the entire tournament."

• In Class AAA, Ringgold was eliminated Saturday morning when Central-Carroll pushed across two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The bases were empty with two outs when consecutive errors put runners on. Cade North and Taylor Funk followed with RBI singles and Funk, who allowed the Lady Tigers (31-7) just three hits, sat Ringgold down in order in the seventh.
