(All kickoffs at 7:30 unless noted)
Thursday, Oct. 24
Sale Creek (0-8) vs. Monterey (4-4) at Tennessee Tech, 8
Friday, Oct. 25
OOLTEWAH (7-1, 4-0) at CLEVELAND (6-3, 4-1)
An early peek: A tangled web? Cleveland, scrambling to assure itself of a playoff spot, could create one by knocking off the Owls. The Blue Raiders are coming off a lopsided win over Walker Valley in which QB Austin Herink was involved in seven scores. This game matches two of the area's top QBs in Herink and the Owls' Brody Binder. Too, Ooltewah expects to have brutish RB Desmond Pittman back for this one. Pittman has sat out the past two games and last week's open date with a knee injury. The visiting team has won the last four meetings.
EAST HAMILTON (7-1) at RHEA COUNTY (7-1)
An early peek: This will be first meeting between the teams, but Hurricanes coach Ted Gatewood is familiar with Rhea County as a head coach and assistant at Ooltewah and as a player at Red Bank. Rhea's Golden Eagles have played well, to be sure, but obviously have benefited from their move out of 5-AAA to 6-AAA. While they beat 5-AAA member Soddy-Daisy two weeks ago, they suffered their lone loss of the year against Walker Valley, which is 3-5 overall and 0-4 in the district. This game could come down to which team's playmakers come up with the best individual performances.
SIGNAL MOUNTAIN (6-2) at GREENEVILLE (8-0)
An early peek: The Green Devils aren't just an offensive power. They have the state's second-best scoring defense (an average 4.3 points allowed in eight games). That includes three shutouts, but Greeneville hasn't allowed more than a touchdown in a game all year. Meanwhile, it has scored at least 40 points in every game with 60-plus each of the last three weeks. Signal is the lone unbeaten in 7-AA but needs this nondistrict game in case it winds up needing a tiebreaker advantage. The Eagles have won two straight and are coming off a 67-13 win over Chattanooga Christian.
HIXSON (6-2, 4-0) at CENTRAL (3-5, 2-3)
An early peek: Central got its collective act together last week and returned to the win column with a lopsided victory at Howard. While the Purple Pounders are out of the 6-AA championship picture, they and their coach, John Allen, would delight in the upset. Allen and Hixson coach Jason Fitzgerald have ties that date back to their days at Rhea County. It could be a quick game. Both teams love to run.
TYNER (2-6, 2-2) at EAST RIDGE (4-4, 3-1)
An early peek: Another quarterback duel -- Tyner's Haasan Miller and East Ridge's Jo Jo Tillery -- in the making? Tyner's Rams need to win out to overcome a pair of forfeits and remain in the playoff race. East Ridge is still in the 6-AA championship picture if it wins out and gets some help from Central or Brainerd in their games with Hixson. If not for the forfeits, Tyner would be on a four-game win streak.
