Friday, Nov. 1

(All kickoffs at 7:30 unless noted)

Bradley Central (5-4, 2-3) at East Hamilton (7-2, 4-1)

An early peek: Even at 5-5, Bradley Central appears likely to be in the Class 6A playoffs, but a 6-4 record probably would keep the Bears from facing 6-AAA champion Rhea County or going to Middle Tennessee against Oakland or Riverdale. East Hamilton, despite losing to Rhea County, is still in the 5-AAA championship picture following Ooltewah's loss to Cleveland. Will Bradley learn anything from watching the Hurricanes' loss to Rhea, and, more importantly, can the Bears take advantage? East Hamilton's pass defense has been stiff most of the season, and Bradley has been a passing team. The other big 5-AAA last-week game is Ooltewah at McMinn County.

Signal Mountain (6-3, 4-0) at Sequatchie County (5-4, 3-1), 8

An early peek: A win by Signal Mountain clinches the 7-AA championship for the Eagles. A win by Sequatchie, coupled with a Notre Dame win at Grundy County, could boost the Indians into 7-AA's No. 2 spot, which would allow them to avoid a probable wild-card spot. Signal will be in the Class 4A playoffs while Notre Dame and Sequatchie are likely Class 3A candidates. Despite having the exact amount of total offense yardage (394), Signal is coming off a lopsided loss to second-ranked Greeneville. The key for Sequatchie is being able to dominate the time of possession and at the same time be productive with its option offense.

Silverdale Baptist (9-0, 2-0) at Boyd-Buchanan (3-6, 2-0)

An early peek: Boyd-Buchanan was deadlocked at halftime, 14-14, at Sequatchie County last week but fell behind in the second half and lost its sixth game in its last eight tries. The Buccaneers have won the District 5-A championship each of the last five seasons. Silverdale is 9-0 for the first time in school history and is poised to win its first district championship and secure its first victory over the Buccaneers.

South Pittsburg (8-1, 3-0) at Marion County (8-1, 3-0), 8

An early peek: The neighborhood rivalry had lacked much of the spice of years past, and some wondered with Vic Grider's resignation as coach if South Pitt's Pirates would maintain their high standard. They have, but Marion County is back thanks to the arrival of coach Mac McCurry, and there has been jawing, subtle and otherwise, much of the year. What it comes down to is the Pirates' speed (Jajuan Lankford outside and Kahlil Mitchell and Corbin Fitzgerald inside) against the brutish, in-your-face power game of Marion's Blake Zeman. Can the Warriors handle the speed and can South Pittsburg stand up to the power? Both are advancing, but the winner surely should be at home for one postseason game and maybe two. Of course, South Pittsburg will be playing in Class 1A, Marion County in Class 2A.
