After placing second in the Silver Division of the Tennessee Classic over the weekend, the Signal Mountain girls' cross country team spent Monday's practice time doing a lot of yoga.

Based on Tuesday's results at Baylor School, the Lady Eagles were both very focused and very relaxed.

Led by Mallory Young's personal-best time for five kilometers, the Signal girls earned their first ever cross country league win, finishing with 49 points -- nine more than both Heritage and Baylor. The Lady Generals finished second overall by virtue of their sixth-place runner finishing one place higher than Baylor's.

Bradley Central's Harold Smith won the boys' race in 16 minutes, 25.09 seconds, while Baylor's boys had an easy win in the team race, scoring 36 points -- 86 fewer than their nearest competitor.

"I'm very excited and amazed by how focused we've been," Signal coach Kim Brown said. "They won this race together; there's been a lot of camaraderie, competition and healthy attitudes on the team, and I couldn't ask for a better team."

Signal had three of the top-10 finishers in the race, led by Young's 18:59.96. Madison Drennan was fifth and Becca Umbarger was ninth. Eighth-grader Kathryn Vradenburgh, who runs for the home school team, was second in 19:57.84.

"I was pretty motivated today, because I had a pretty bad race Saturday," Young said. "It was my goal to get under 20 minutes, so I went hard and it helped having the wind at my back. I was on the final stretch and my dad told me I was at 18:30, so I definitely wanted to finish fast."
