St. Pius X ends Coahulla Creek Colts' perfect tennis run

Matt Facey was able to see the progress in his Coahulla Creek boys' tennis team Monday. He just wished there was a win to go along with that progress.

The Colts suffered their first loss of the season in the second round of the Georgia Class AAA state tournament against St. Pius X of Atlanta. It was a 5-0 final that included a number of games that went to deuce but ended a season that included the three-year program's first region championship and first playoff victory.

Facey was pleased with the Colts' performance. Andy Dixon and Austin Lansing claimed a set at No. 2 doubles, while Donovan Newby and Austin Turner dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles.

"It was a tough loss, but I'm excited about what's going into the future," said Facey, who loses four seniors. "We've luckily been able to get some new students in the tennis realm, and there are some keepers among them. We've been having to rely more or less on athletes playing multiple sports, but now we're starting to see kids investing in one or two sports and we're seeing kids working all summer on a specific sport, and we're all benefiting from it."

• Calhoun 3, Lovett 2: The Yellow Jackets' Desmond Printup and Adrian Lively claimed a big win at No. 2 doubles to help their team move on to the Class AA state quarterfinals, where they will face Greater Atlanta Christian in a match that has to be completed by Saturday.

Jake Briggs and Andrew Stewart also won for Calhoun (20-0), who played without No. 1 singles player McClain Kessler.

The Calhoun girls' season came to a close Monday in a 4-0 loss to Lovett. The Lady Yellow Jackets finished with an 18-2 record.
