Baylor emerged as the only 2-0 team through the first three games at The Summit of Softball Complex on Friday in first-day action in East Hamilton's Choo Choo Classic high school tournament.
The Lady Red Raiders defeated Meigs County 8-1 in five innings and beat American Christian Academy from Tuscaloosa, Ala., 12-0 in four innings.
The tournament is scheduled to resume pool play this morning at 9. Single-elimination play is slated to start early in the afternoon. Depending on pool-play records, teams will be placed in eaither Gold or Silver divisions. The Silver final is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. The Gold championship is set for 6.
Noelle Winkles sparked Baylor (10-1) offensively against Meigs, going 2-for-3, both doubles, and driving in four runs.
Haley Andrus was among five with multiple-hit games in the Lady Raiders' second game. She was 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs in addition to having six assists from third base.
"One of those was a diving play," Baylor coach Kelli Smith said. "To write that down 5-3 in the scorebook doesn't do that play justice at all."
It also helped preserve Kayla Hughes' no-hitter. Cayley Quinn pitched a four-hitter and was the winning pitcher in the first game.
"Overall we hit the ball extremely well," Smith said. "Both of our pitchers stayed ahead in the count. We ran the bases extremely well. We just played good, solid softball."
Silverdale Baptist Academy lost 5-4 to Farragut in five innings in its first game but prevented Soddy-Daisy from joining Baylor by beating the Lady Trojans 2-0.
Madi Hancock was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth inning, and Elise Pearson followed with a home run. Emily Harkleroad was the winning pitcher with a three-hitter.
""We feel like we've got solid pitching," SBA coach Tim Couch said. "We played really good defense and made the routine plays. We feel like if we can do that, we'll be in a lot of games. That's what we did in both games today."
