Bucs roll 46-0, seal 5-A championship

For Boyd-Buchanan there's another district football championship, but the Buccaneers are more excited about a five-game win streak and the opportunity to extend it.

The comeback Bucs got to .500 for the first time this season Friday night with a 46-0 District 5-A victory over Silverdale Baptist.

"I thought we'd win. I felt good about it during the week," Bucs coach Grant Reynolds said. "I think we have a good opportunity to host a (state playoff) game next week."

With just a handful of seniors, the Bucs stumbled early and often in the first half of the season, but Reynolds said they never lost the faith or the hunger.

"They've played with a resolve the last five weeks that's unbelievable and a determination that I really like," the coach said. "I think we can keep playing and keep doing good things."

Boyd-Buchanan wasted little time taking the lead, finishing its initial drive with a 3-yard Austin Jackson touchdown run less than six minutes into the game. The Bucs stretched it to 25-0 by halftime with two other Jackson scoring runs and an 8-yarder in between by Jeremy Borders.

"They were blitzing the edges, taking away our sweeps, and I was really proud of the offensive line and our ability to move the ball between the tackles," Reynolds said.

Boyd-Buchanan ran for 328 yards, averaging 8.4 yards per attempt. The Bucs were led by E.J. Matthews' 161 yards, and Jackson added 70.

Borders returned a punt 47 yards for a score with 8:21 to go in the third quarter. Matthews' 40-yard run started the mercy-rule running clock at the 6:25 mark of the third period with his team holding a 39-0 lead. That particular drive, which took one play, was set up by freshman safety Kohl Henke's interception.

The final TD came on freshman Michael Mincey's 20-yard run with slightly more than a minute to go.

Led by Jake Harden, who had nine tackles including four for lost yardage, the swarming, pressuring Bucs held the Seahawks to 18 rushing yards and 25 passing yards.

"Our defense has been playing pretty well the past few weeks, and our offense did what it needed to do to get the ball into the end zone," Reynolds said.

"They're a good ballclub. They're well-disciplined. They cut down on defense," Silverdale coach Al Rogers said. "They have a reputation and there's a reason they have that reputation."

While Boyd-Buchanan finished the regular season at 5-5, Silverdale was in a position to push the issue and could have been playoff-bound itself with a win Friday.

"There are a bunch of people that didn't think we'd win a game, but we came and played, basically with a sophomore team this year," Rogers said. "They met the challenge although we started multiple freshmen on both sides, too, and this gives us a bright outlook for the future."
