Cody Godfrey found an upgrade.

"I just ordered some new clubs," he said. "They should be in by the weekend."

But it's hard to upgrade on Godfrey's performance last year in the Cleveland Invitational tournament, when he won by three strokes despite a triple-bogey on the final hole.

Godfrey -- he hopes with new clubs in his bag -- will attempt to retain his championship in the 2015 Cleveland Invitational this Saturday and Sunday at Cleveland Country Club.

"My clubs were worn out," Godfrey said. "I hit all the new clubs like Nike, TaylorMade and Titleist, but I went with pretty much the same thing as last year, but newer."

Godfrey shot a 3-under-par 141 and beat former high school teammate Hunter Vest by three strokes. Mitch Hufstetler won the senior division title.

"It's fun any time that you're the defending champion," Godfrey said. "It puts you under a little more pressure."

Lamar Mills, CCC's general manager, said he has 90 participants signed up and the field could grow to 100 by the time the entry deadline passes today at 5 p.m.

Godfrey said he has spent much of the spring working two jobs, including one as a caddie at The Honors Course, which has limited his practice time.

"It's going to be interesting to say the least," he said. "I don't know what to expect when I go out there. I've missed golf because it's been so cold and so wet this winter.

"It will be fun to get back into competition."
