The Arts & Sciences soccer team has been waiting for what could be considered a "breakout game" for goalkeeper Cary Williams this season.

In the Patriots' biggest win to date, he gave it to them.

Williams finished with five saves -- two huge ones in the second half -- and the Patriots claimed the District 5-A/AA regular-season championship Tuesday with a 2-1 road win over 11th-ranked Boyd-Buchanan.

The teams will be the top two seeds when the district tournament begins this weekend.

It's the second consecutive season that CSAS has won on Boyd-Buchanan's home turf.

"It's a good surface for us," Patriots coach David Poss said. "Boyd-Buchanan is fast, and we have players that recognize and adjust to their speed.

"Today we made the best of our opportunities."

The Patriots (8-6, 6-1) built a 2-0 lead in the first half on an unassisted goal by Zachary Webber in the 12th minute and on a header by Joshua Barbosa, assisted by Christopher Payne on a free kick, in the 36th. The Bucs trimmed the lead in half when Will Boynton rerouted a Kade Owens free kick during the first-half stoppage time.

In the second half, the Bucs played with extra numbers in the attack, knowing that at least a tie in the match would give them the district championship. They had chances, pounding the box every chance they had.

During the match's final moments, Williams dived to his right, getting a hand on a David Ingram header. The defense helped, clearing dangerous opportunities out of the box.

Dakota Matthews sealed the win with a long clear toward the end.

"It's a little frustrating. I think it was a well-played match, but they finished the opportunities they had and we didn't," Boyd-Buchanan coach Dustin Walker said. "It's always a good game between us; it's just about who puts chances in the back of the net.

"We just didn't do that tonight."
