McCallie clips Irish on long fumble return in jamboree

PIKEVILLE, Tenn. - Lookout Valley coach Tony Webb sought out Grundy County coach Casey Tate to determine how long - if at all - they would play starters in a late period of the Sequatchie Valley jamboree Friday night.

Webb, as did many of the coaches gathered at Bledsoe County High School, wanted to get his reserves as much experience as possible.

"We need to work on learning the speed of the game, recognizing motions and getting lined up in time," Webb said. "That's where we are."

Lookout Valley lost 14-0 to Bledsoe County in the opening period of the event.

Warriors running back Tavian Dodd scored from about 40 yards out on the second play of the night. He took advantage of mistakes Webb described, broke one tackle and scooted into the end zone. Caleb Smith scooted 46 yards in setting up another Bledsoe touchdown. Quarterback Chaise Sorrow capped off the drive with a 2-yard keeper through the ride side of the line.

"Our ones were pretty sharp," first-year Bledsoe County coach Josh Owensby said. "Our twos have to clean up small mistakes like all the penalties we had."

Webb said quarterback Austin Stansifer had a quality evening but wasn't helped by three dropped passes.

* Silverdale Baptist 0, Whitwell 0: Silverdale junior Alex Gonzalez lined up at quarterback, receiver and defensive back. He completed all three pass attempts and made an interception. Whitwell fumbled on its first offensive play. Whitwell senior Jake Sartin recovered a fumble and Avery Shrum stopped Gonzalez, setting up a fourth down.

* South Pittsburg 14, Grundy County 0: The Pirates opened with a 30-yard pass to Cade Kennemore, who later made an interception. Junior Joseph Lilly scored on a 29-yard run. Chase Blevins gained about 100 yards on the ground, including a 64-yard score. For Grundy, Zack Brody recovered a fumble and Ethan Nunley had a 38-yard run.

* Sequatchie County 6, Marion County 0: Quarterback Ethan Barker kept for an 8-yard touchdown on fourth-and goal. His pass for the two-point conversion failed.

* South Pittsburg 14, Silverdale Baptist 0: Lilly had a game in a quarter. He scored on a 60-yard run up the middle and from 63 yards through the left side.

* Lookout Valley 0, Grundy County 0: Grundy County's Hagen Cash had long runs of 26 yards and 36 yards. Quran Gibson knocked down two passes defending for Lookout Valley.

* Marion County 21, Whitwell 0: Josh Henderson scored twice for the Warriors, once on a fumble recovery, and Kane Hale caught a touchdown pass.

* Bledsoe County 0, Sequatchie County 0: The Warriors and Indians held off each other, leaving South Pittsburg as the night's only 2-0 team.
