Pedal to the metal

Chad Fisher does not sugarcoat it. The LaFayette defense last year was awful, and the numbers are not something a coach ever wants to see.

After a promising 2-1 start in nonregion play, the Ramblers went winless in Region 7-AAAA. The lowest point total they gave up during league play was 41. There were games in which they allowed 69, 62 and 55 points. They gave up 52 to Heritage and 49 to a four-win Ridgeland team.

"There were times last year when we were just overmatched," Fisher said. "We made some changes in the offseason, and our biggest thing is we want to fly around and compete. We're accomplishing that so far."

Fisher has turned to former LaFayette player Matt Yarbrough to coordinate a defensive turnaround. Yarbrough is switching schemes to the 3-4 to take advantage of an athletic - and also very young - group of linebackers and a secondary led by ball-hawking speedster KaDarrian Ramsey.

Among the eight starters returning defensively is leading tackler Clayton Lane, a senior linebacker who likely will do as much teaching as he will tackling this year. He could be joined by as many as three freshmen on the field at the same time.

"We're counting on Clayton to be a leader for us because we've got some young talent back there," said Fisher, mentioning freshmen Colton Lane, Jake Martin and Andrew Pendagrass. "We feel good about the change and the direction Matt is leading the defense."

Route ’15: It’s been 21 years since LaFayette reached the playoffs, and only twice during that time has the program had a winning season. After an 0-7 mark in what turned out to be a deep Region 7-AAAA last season, Coach Fisher’s goals are to get an early league win and build some positive momentum as he builds the program.

Taking the wheel: Two-way starter Clayton Lane, a 5-11, 215-pound senior FB/LB, brings toughness to each side of the ball and is the team’s leading returning tackler. KaDarrin Ramsey, a 5-9, 170-pound junior who has been clocked at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash, is another two-way player; he will get more carries in the backfield.

Cruise control: One of Fisher’s first goals when he took over the program two seasons ago was to raise the team’s level of physical play up front. The lines should be strengths this year. The O-line is led by senior tackle Donnie Cornett (6-3, 260) and junior Jake Russell (6-3, 225), while the D-line is headed by senior Logan Wattanbarger (6-2, 240).

Pump the brakes: Finding a replacement for 2,000-yard passer Evan Head is the obvious concern for a team that wants to be balanced offensively. The two candidates to start are senior Conner Green and junior Logan Tesley, and as summer workouts neared the end, they were locked in a tight battle, Fisher said. The Ramblers also must replace top playmaker Kolbe Mosley.

Backseat driver: A rival coach said of the Ramblers, “When we played LaFayette, it seemed like the effort was there and you could see some young talent. They didn’t have a lot of depth and it showed late in games, and I’m sure that’s going to improve.”
